Describe a problem you've solved or a problem you'd like to solve. It can be an intellectual challenge, a research query, an ethical dilemma - anything that is of personal importance, no matter the scale. Explain its significance to you and what steps you took or could be taken to identify a solution.While we love a good problem-solving story because we are solution-oriented, this prompt can be tricky. We like it because it asks you to be specific and it asks you to be clear about something that you care about in your explanation. It is a bit of an extension of prompt 3 because it’s asking you to take your observations “about a belief or idea” a step further and translate them into actionable movement. If y ou choose to answer this question, we have a few tips:  Only consider the first five words. “Describe a problem you’ve solved.” Go from there. By writing about a problem you would “like to solve” you are risking writing an essay about a hypothetical incident or occurrence. The goal with this essay is to stay grounded and give the reader some tangible content about a complicated situation that you conquered or solved. The reader does not care as much about something that you might do. They care that you identified a problem and took the steps that you believed to be necessary to solve or further it. Tell that story. Take the reader right into the middle of your solution web, then backtrack and zoom out to give them an idea of what you’re working with, and then present your solution and its implications. 2. Keep it moving.  In other words: do not spend your precious word-count describing the problem at hand. Spend it on your solution and the actions that you took towards r esolution or advancement. While your beliefs reflect who you are and are certainly the underpinnings of this essay, your actions validate and reinforce your beliefs. This essay is about action. Take it a step further: take your response off of the page and bring the reader into this situation you were in when you completed a series of steps towards advancing your belief system. Examples of How to Write a Good Descriptive Paragraph

A good descriptive paragraph is like a window into another world. Through the use of careful examples or details, an author can conjure a scene that vividly describes a person, place, or thing. The best descriptive writing appeals to multiple senses at once―smell, sight, taste, touch, and hearing―and is found in both fiction and nonfiction. In their own way, each of the following writers (three of them students, two of them professional authors) have selected a belonging or a place that holds special meaning to them. After identifying that subject in a clear topic sentence, they proceed to describe it in detail while explaining its personal significance. A Friendly Clown On one corner of my dresser sits a smiling toy clown on a tiny unicycle―a gift I received last Christmas from a close friend. The clowns short yellow hair, made of yarn, covers its ears but is parted above the eyes. The blue eyes are outlined in black with thin, dark lashes flowing from the brows. It has cherry-red cheeks, nose, and lips, and its broad grin disappears into the wide, white ruffle around its neck. The clown wears a fluffy, two-tone nylon costume. The left side of the outfit is light blue, and the right side is red. The two colors merge in a dark line that runs down the center of the small outfit. Surrounding its ankles and disguising its long black shoes are big pink bows. The white spokes on the wheels of the unicycle gather in the center and expand to the black tire so that the wheel somewhat resembles the inner half of a grapefruit. The clown and unicycle together stand about a foot high. As a cherished gift from my good friend Tran, this colorful figure gree ts me with a smile every time I enter my room. Observe how the writer moves clearly from a description of the head of the clown to the body to the unicycle underneath. There arent just sensory details for the eyes but also touch, in the description that the hair is made of yarn and the suit of nylon. Certain colors are specific, as in cherry-red cheeks and light blue, and descriptions help to visualize the object: the parted hair, the color line on the suit, and the grapefruit analogy. Dimensions overall help to provide the reader with the items scale, and the descriptions of the size of the ruffle and bows on the shoes in comparison to whats nearby provide telling detail. The concluding sentence helps to tie the paragraph together by emphasizing the personal value of this gift. The Blond Guitar by Jeremy Burden My most valuable possession is an old, slightly warped blond guitar―the first instrument I taught myself how to play. Its nothing fancy, just a Madeira folk guitar, all scuffed and scratched and fingerprinted. At the top is a bramble of copper-wound strings, each one hooked through the eye of a silver tuning key. The strings are stretched down a long, slim neck, its frets tarnished, the wood worn by years of fingers pressing chords and picking notes. The body of the Madeira is shaped like an enormous yellow pear, one that was slightly damaged in shipping. The blond wood has been chipped and gouged to gray, particularly where the pick guard fell off years ago. No, its not a beautiful instrument, but it still lets me make music, and for that I will always treasure it. Here, the writer uses a topic sentence to open his paragraph, then uses the following sentences to add specific details. The author creates an image for the minds eye to travel across by describing the parts of the guitar in a logical fashion, from the strings on the head to the worn wood on the body. He emphasizes its condition by the number of different descriptions of the wear on the guitar, such as noting its slight warp; distinguishing between scuffs and scratches; describing the effect that fingers have had on the instrument by wearing down its neck, tarnishing frets, and leaving prints on the body; listing both its chips and gouges and even noting their effects on the color of the instrument. The author even describes the remnants of missing pieces. After all that, he plainly states his affection for it. Gregory by Barbara Carter Gregory is my beautiful gray Persian cat. He walks with pride and grace, performing a dance of disdain as he slowly lifts and lowers each paw with the delicacy of a ballet dancer. His pride, however, does not extend to his appearance, for he spends most of his time indoors watching television and growing fat. He enjoys TV commercials, especially those for Meow Mix and 9 Lives. His familiarity with cat food commercials has led him to reject generic brands of cat food in favor of only the most expensive brands. Gregory is as finicky about visitors as he is about what he eats, befriending some and repelling others. He may snuggle up against your ankle, begging to be petted, or he may imitate a skunk and stain your favorite trousers. Gregory does not do this to establish his territory, as many cat experts think, but to humiliate me because he is jealous of my friends. After my guests have fled, I look at the old fleabag snoozing and smiling to himself in front of the television set, and I have to forgive him for his obnoxious, but endearing, habits. The writer here focuses less on the physical appearance of her pet than on the cats habits and actions. Notice how many different descriptors go into just the sentence about how the cat walks: emotions of pride and disdain and the extended metaphor of the dancer, including the phrases the dance of disdain, grace, and ballet dancer. When you want to portray something through the use of a metaphor, make sure you are consistent, that all the descriptors make sense with that one metaphor. Dont use two different metaphors to describe the same thing, because that makes the image youre trying to portray awkward and convoluted. The consistency adds emphasis and depth to the description. Personification is an effective literary device for giving lifelike detail to an inanimate object or an animal, and Carter uses it to great effect. Look at how much time she spends on the discussions of what the cat takes pride in (or doesnt) and how it comes across in his attitude, with being finicky and jealous, acting to humiliate by spraying, and just overall behaving obnoxiously. Still, she conveys her clear affection for the cat, something to which many readers can relate. The Magic Metal Tube by Maxine Hong Kingston Once in a long while, four times so far for me, my mother brings out the metal tube that holds her medical diploma. On the tube are gold circles crossed with seven red lines each―joy ideographs in abstract. There are also little flowers that look like gears for a gold machine. According to the scraps of labels with Chinese and American addresses, stamps, and postmarks, the family airmailed the can from Hong Kong in 1950. It got crushed in the middle, and whoever tried to peel the labels off stopped because the red and gold paint came off too, leaving silver scratches that rust. Somebody tried to pry the end off before discovering that the tube falls apart. When I open it, the smell of China flies out, a thousand-year-old bat flying heavy-headed out of the Chinese caverns where bats are as white as dust, a smell that comes from long ago, far back in the brain. Notice how Kingston integrates informative and descriptive details in this account of the metal tube that holds her mothers diploma from medical school. She uses color, shape, texture (rust, missing paint, pry marks, and scratches), and smell, where she has a particularly strong metaphor that surprises the reader with its distinctness. The last sentence in the paragraph (not reproduced here) is more about the smell; closing the paragraph with this aspect adds emphasis to it. The order of the description is also logical, as the first response to the closed object is how it looks rather than how it smells when opened. Inside District School #7, Niagara County, New York by Joyce Carol Oates Inside, the school smelled smartly of varnish and wood smoke from the potbellied stove. On gloomy days, not unknown in upstate New York in this region south of Lake Ontario and east of Lake Erie, the windows emitted a vague, gauzy light, not much reinforced by ceiling lights. Scrapbooking Essay As I sit on my bed, with nothing to do, my mind is suddenly filled. What can I do with all my JUNK? I search in old dusty boxes, underneath my bed, in my closet and take a look at old picture frames, memories that have been sitting aside for years. What can I do to make it all come together? As I think, look around, and think again, I say quietly to myself, Why dont I create a scrapbook? Scrapbooking is a great way to preserve memories and pass them down in a creative and unique way. When a person thinks of scrapbooking, what do they think? I think of all the pictures and memorabilia that I have saved to create a portrait of my life which I can cherish forever. Scrapbooking is more than making cute pages. Scrapbooking is a unique craft and strange hobby that is rapidly changing (What). One wants to make sure all the photos in the scrapbook are safe and wont be destroyed. As the science of photography is changing, the life of the pictures is being increased, as long as all the safe materials are being used and precautions are taken in what they are doing and how it is being done (What). Scrapbooking can capture the special people and events we encounter in life. Many people like to take pictures of family traditions, favorite things and accomplishments (Braun 11). When creating a scrapbook, a person is able to pass down memories from when they were younger. Scrapbooking is a creative way to relax and have fun. Scrapbooking has become popular over the years because people are able to create something that will last forever. Many people want to transform their old photo albums into scrapbooks because there is more room for creativity (Brown). But a person has to remember that scrapbooking can become costly and very time consuming. The first thing to consider before creating a scrapbook is to gather all of the information to include. Doing this will cause less hassle when creating pages and will allow for more time in doing so. Collecting photographs, treasures, certificates, brochures and documents (Organizing). Keep anything that has great significance in a persons life, so that they are able to reflect back on it. Newspaper articles are a good thing to save because they help explain whats going on. Talking to family and friends will often uncover information one doesnt have and would like to cherish (Braun 12). The second thing the scrapbooker wants to do is organize everything. A clean work area, with enough space to spread many pictures and paper out, is helpful. Putting pictures, paper, and tools in stacks and containers is also helpful because its easier to find things, so that when something is needed one can go right to the box and get what they needed, instead of having to search for it (Organization) . After getting organized and gathering all of the information, its time to decide which kind of album to use. Many different types and styles of albums are available to choose from. The spiral-bound album does not allow pages to be removed or added, so pages cant be rearranged. This type of album would be reliable for a person who is precise and has little work to do. The 3-ring binder is more like a photo album, not a scrapbook, so it is not often recommended (Preserving Memories). Another type of album is the strap-hinged album. These albums are most common because they allow one to add and remove pages and rearrange them (Brown Before). Above all, when considering what album to buy one would want to make sure not to buy from a department or discount store because they might not be high quality (Choosing). One should buy from a scrapbook store or a place that sells quality scrapbooking necessities such as paper and stickers. Three sizes of albums can be chosen from when considering buying an album. The first size is 57. This size does not allow for much creativity because the space is so small. This size of album would be good for a gift, fitting very few pictures. The next size is the 8.511. This size is bigger than the 57 but still does not allow for much creativity; the pages being small are harder to work with. The next size, 1212, is the most common. This is the biggest size, allowing more pictures to be added as well as embellishments. This album would be good for creating a family album or a high school album. Scrapbook albums can cost anywhere from $10.00 to over $100.00 dollars. The average album cost is around $40.00 (Choosing). My favorite is the 12 x 12 strap-hinged. I like working with this size because it allows me to work with more space and create more on a page. If I mess up, I can also remove the page and then replace it with a new one. Procrastination EssaySome things that one wants to know when beginning to make a scrapbook. A person should follow this plan as a guide to help them through their first couple of pages. One must lay out the pictures. Discard the blurry photos and pick out the ones that best tell a story (Brown; Corneil). Next a person wants to look at the pictures again to see if there is anything distracting the view of an object. If there is, then one should crop them out using the cutters. When cropping, make sure not to cut too much because once cut one cant go back. After cropping, a person wants to pick out the picture that stands out the most to be the focusing point (How). Again lay out the pictures, but this time lay them out on the page to see if there is a chronological or special way that the pictures should go on the page. After figuring out what pictures go where a person can begin to mat and glue. One wants to mat pictures so that they stand out. Matting also gives color to the page (Naylor). Once everything is cropped, matted, and arranged, we can glue it all down (Brown and Corneil). Once everything is glued down one wants to journal. Pictures are worth a 1000 words. But only if you can read the words (Brown and Corneil). Journaling is an important part in contributing to a scrapbook. One wants to make sure they answer the questions of who, what, where, when and why. Another important part is to make a headline or title for the page. One wants people to know whats going on and the stories behind the pictures (Braun 19-21). There are many questions one can ask when going to journal. Why was this picture so important that it was taken? Whats happening in these pictures? Why are all these people together? The answers to these questions are what makes your scrapbooks so special only you have these answers and stories (Brown and Corneil). Many people think that scrapbooking is easy, but in reality it can be difficult. According to Helen Naylor of Scrapbooking.com she believes that there are many lessons that one can avoid, to make scrapbooking a little less difficult. 1. Use decorative scissors for matting photos, not cutting them. 2. Only use the shapes of circles and ovals. Cutting the photos into shapes makes it harder to work with. 3. Only crop a picture if there is a negative or a copy of the picture. 4. For older photos use the photo corners for adhesives. For the newer pictures one can use the mounting squares (Naylor). I have learned that their can never be too many pictures. I have also learned that cropping pictures can be dangerous if I dont have another copy. Another thing that I have learned is that when going to journal one needs to write what theyre going to say before writing it on the page. Because if one messes up then they have to redo the page. Creating a scrapbook is a fun and exciting project that will capture memories to last a lifetime, if it is constructed correctly. Scrapbooking can become stressful, but when considering making a scrapbook as a way to preserve and cherish memories the stress can be well worth it. To me, my scrapbook has been well worth the time, money and the stress. I had a wonderful time completing my scrapbook. I always find myself well occupied and always having something to do now that I have taken on the hobby of scrapbooking. About Ferdinand Magellan essays Ferdinand Magellen was a great explorer from the 1500's. He was born in Portugal in 1480 and when he was young, he learned cartography (map-making), astronomy and navigation in Lisbon.He served with the Portugese fleet in the far east. He had a disagreement with the portugese King as to whether the Phillipine Islands belonged to Portugal or Spain. In 1517, he left Portugal and offered his services to the Spannish King and Queen. It was the doubt as to which country owned the Spice islands according to the treaty of Tordesillas. This was the main reason for Magellens voyage in 1519. He left Spain that year with five ships and a crew of 265 men. His own ship, "The Trinidad" (the flagship), "The Santiego", "The Victoria" "The Concepcion" and "The San Antonia." In 1520, they reached Argentina and magellen decided to spend some time there. He then learned that his crew were planning to put him to death in treason, so he acted quickly and hung the ringleader. In October 1520, he reached Cape Horn and sailed into the straits which now bear his name. In March 1521, they reached the Phillipines and stopped at Mactan island. The King of Mactan asked for Magellens help to fight in a local tribal war. Magellen was struck in the face with a spear and died. The ships navigator, Sabastion Del Cano loaded "The Victoria" with spices and sailed back to Spain in September 1522. Even though Magellen did not return home, he must be given the credit for this great voyage. ...

Discussion: Microscopy is vital for the reason that it allows you to look into certain bits and pieces closely and find out more information about the item. It allows you to glance at many existing cells and other things as well. History: In 1665 an Englishman named Robert Hooke cut out some very thin strips of cork and looked at them using a very primitive microscope. What he saw was little tiny spaces which he called cells as they reminded him of tiny rooms. He was the first person to actually see this. The invention of the microscope was a huge technological breakthrough which enabled scientists to develop ideas about the structure of living things. Safety Points: * Take care not to cut yourself while cutting the onion. * Make certain with the function of the microscope is handled with care. * Pay attention not to stain yourself while undertaking the experimentation. Materials: * Knife * Onion * Dissection scissors * Fine forceps * Water * Pipette * Microscope slide * Microscope * Cover-slip * Mounted needle * Iodine solution * Filter paper Method: * I sliced vertically through an onion bulb and detached one of the leaves of the bulb. * With a pair off of fine forceps I cautiously peeled off its epidermis, being cautious not to separate the cells from the layer beneath. * Using a razor-sharp pair of dissection scissors I cut out a piece of epidermis about 5mm by 5mm. * Using a pipette I carefully placed a drop of water on a clean microscope slide. * I carefully placed the epidermis in the drop of water ensuring that it was flat, using a mounted needle if necessary. * I positioned a cover slip on top of the epidermis, again making sure that it was kept flat. * On one side of the cover slip I placed a drop of iodine solution, which was a suitable stain for the plant cells. * I placed the cut edge of a piece of filter paper to the other side of the cover slip which would draw a small amount of stain beneath the cover slip. * Viewing with a microscope I looked at the slide through low power then followed by high. Evaluation: I could see less detail in the lower magnification and in the high magnification I could see more detail such as the cytoplasm. The lower magnification allowed me to see the nucleus, cytoplasm and cell wall. I could see dozens of cells in low magnification but in high I could see three or four cells at a very close range. One problem which I encountered was that I couldnt peel the epidermis to a thin tissue. To overcome this I asked my teacher to help me peel it properly. This technique is good because it allows you to look at cells by cutting a small tissue of something. If the water had different chemicals in it then it would have effected the slide because it would show different chemicals when you look at it. If I had more time then I would look at it in different magnifications and would be able to get more accurate readings and drawings. Results: Discussion of Vocational Implications: Two differences between school microscopy and microscopy in the industry is that in school we use light microscopes that need light to obtain the image by reflecting off the mirror and have. In industry however scientists use electron microscopes. Another difference is that scientists have microscopes with more magnifications so they can look deeper into the cell. In school the microscopes used have not got the ability to magnify over 40x (104=400). One similarity is that the same method is used. We put the tissue to be examined on the slide and examine it looking through different magnifications. Another similarity is that scientists look at the same things we do in school such as onion slides and other tissues.

A Historical View of the Victorian Governess    Although the governess serves as the heroine in Jane Eyre, she was not a popular figure in Victorian England. The governess did not have a social position worthy of attention (Peterson 4). Aristocratic and middle-class Victorians were not even sure how to treat the governess. She was from the same class, but her lack of financial stability made them view her as their inferior. Perhaps the clearest definition of the governess was stated by Lady Elizabeth Eastlake in the Quarterly Review: The real definition of a governess in the English sense, is a being who is our equal in birth, manners, and education, but our inferior in worldly wealth. Take a lady in every meaning of the word, born and bred and let her father pass through the gazette (bankruptcy), and she wants nothing more to suit our highest beau ideal of a guide and instructress to our children. (qtd. in Peterson 10) The only time a woman of birth and education was justified in seeking employment was if she found herself in financial distress, and had no relatives to give her support (Peterson 6). The position of governess was especially appropriate for a lady who sought employment because of the death of her father, or his financial ruin. It was considered appropriate because, while it was paid work, it was in the home. The governess avoided the immodest and unladylike position of public occupation. The position of governess would not cause a lady to loose her social position (Peterson 6). The employment of a gentle woman in a Victorian middle-class family served to reinforce certain values (Peterson 4). The governess was to teach the female children skills that would be attractive in marriage such as fluency in a forei... ...er employment for governesses. These organizations also provided temporary housing, insurance, and annuities for the aging governess. As for the life of a governess, perhaps Bronte described it best when she wrote to a friend regarding his daughter. PANTALONE: Pantalone is of top pecking order. He is wealthy and controls the finance in the character world of commedia, therefore his orders are usually obeyed by all. He is the father of Isabella. He wears dark colours of black, grey and red; dynamic Pantaloons, tight-fitting long red trousers or red breeches and stockings, a short tight-fitting jacket, a loose long black cloak with plain sleeves, red-woollen skull-cap and yellow turkish slippers. He is lean and scrawny and often short in stature. He wears a mask with a long, hooked nose with bushy eyebrows, sometimes also a moustache. Pointed beard just forward as if to meet the nose coming down, thus giving a very dynamic profile. His signature props are a gold chain hung around his neck with a large medallion as well as a dagger and a money pouch. He also carried a ubiquitous handkerchief and used a walking cane. His back bends giving him a hunched old man’s stoop, which protected his purse and effectively restricted the motion of his legs. His feet are together, toes apart, knees well bent and facing apart creating a focus on his crutch. His legs are also much more muscled with the possibility of sustaining extreme forward positions of the torso or making large strides. Bullying, aggressively and mean-minded, Pantalone, a pauper who had squandered his dignity along with his cash. He’s always on the prowl and he could be termed a Beelzebub of sex. Any woman who happens to cross his path becomes at once an object of winks, leers and nudges†¦ he parades up and down in a series of showily self-important struts, trips, trots and sudden halts. His walk is small and slow and he can only walk at one pace; whatever his feet do his legs cannot go any faster, whatever the motive or stimulus. He’s  old in body, but his head, feet and hands are still active. The hands (which he can’t keep to himself) flutter continuously, gesticulating each thought as it comes into his head. The only way he can stop this is to hold them behind his back, underneath his cloak. His voice is similar to a high pitched squawk that continuously breaks. It’s cold and prudish and demanding. Pantalone gives voice to the darker side of the male consciousness, a secret hero to the unenlightened males in the audience. He is mean to his servants, narrow-mindedly proscriptive to his children, fawning to Il’ Dottore, scheming with Il’ Capitano, lecherous with Colombina and indulgent to himself. He is too self-interested to be aware of spectators, therefore takes no notice of them. Pantalone operates on the assumption that everything can be bought and sold, and this turns out to be true, with the exception of loyalty (and love). But he also loves money for its own sake and will therefore only part with it when there is no other option. He always wants to marry his daughter to a wealthy man – and avoid giving her a dowry. When things do not go his way he quickly slips into emotional extremes, particularly enraged petty tyranny. He has a long memory and never forgets or forgives the slightest past transgression. Pantalone is action, not words. IL CAPITANO: Il’Capitano is a loner. He is never indigenous to the town where the scenario is set and is able to pretend to high status as a result. His downfall to the level of actual social standing is an essential part of the denouement. Being a ‘Capitan’ he wore a feathered helmet or hat, huge boots and exaggerated garters. His clothes were sometimes diagonally striped or slashed, but whatever the style, close scrutiny reveals the truth: Magnificent in words, but his purse is always empty and under his beautifully richly damascened cuirass he wears but a frayed and tattered leather jerkin. Il Capitano himself, however, always claims that his  tattered undergarments are caused by the amazing virility of his body hair bursting through whenever he gets angry. Il Capitano appears large, whether physically or egotistically, he is a large presence on stage. He try’s to attract attention from women and intimidate men. He wears a mask with a great menacing nose and  fierce, bristling moustaches, which seemed like veritable iron spikes defending the entrance to a citadel only too ready to capitulate. The mask, in its general aspect, was intended to emphasize the contrast between a brave appearance and a craven nature. His signature prop is a long sword that he never actually uses for fighting. His feet are planted apart in order to occupy maximum space, his chest is pushed forward and his back is always straight and tall standing with his hips wide. His walk is a long stride where the heels of his boots come down first, then the foot rolls onto the ball, then he steps again off the ball of his foot giving him rise and bounce in his step so his head can be among the clouds. However, his actual steps are small (he is in no hurry to get to war, but wants to do so with maximum effect). When he hears a frightening noise he drops everything, but only succeeds in running on the spot, head thrown back, arms in the air, kicking his feet forward and howling piteously. When he hears a wolf (or small dog) he shrinks little by little until he has made himself unnoticeable as possible, then scurries away in a crouch. When fleeing from a mouse he adopts a kind of leaping promenade walk in order to prevent it running up his legs. When scared witless he occasionally runs to be seen, to show off his legs. He often stands at attention or with his hand on his sword, nose in the air and his chest puffed out. When he’s not pretending to be brave he is cowering with fear. His movements are slow, deliberate and mechanical with his gestures being extravagant and sustained. His speech is loud and proud turning to a squeak when frightened. He was originally employed by Pantalone to do his dirty work for him. They worked  well together as lechers with financial aspirations: Il’Capitano to get rich, Pantalone to remain so. Pantalone would often congratulate Il Capitano on his efforts, and then betray him to others. He is almost used as a prop by all the other characters. The whole world is an audience. He stops whenever he sees the actual audience and makes a salutation so that he can be admired. Initially his magnificence may take in the other characters, but never the audience: something in his very first entrance (a trip for example) should give him away. IL DOTTORE: Il Dottore is the head of another family and is often the father of a lover, usually Lelio. He is the equivalent of Pantalone who thinks he has brains. He wears a black academic dress satirising Bolognese scholars, a long jacket with black coat over-reaching to his heels, black shoes, stockings and breeches, and black skull-cap. His appearance is grand: his huge size comes directly from Carnival and contrasts with Pantalone. His mask covers the nose and forehead and sometimes the cheeks, which are red as he is apparently fond of the bottle. His signature props include a book and a white handkerchief. He would stand with his weight back on his heels, belly forward and his hands gesturing in front. He walks peripatetically in figures of eight, using tiny, mincing steps. His walking posture descends while he thinks (out loud, of course) and rises up again on the solution of the problem. When posing, he leans forward with a hand on his face, usually tapping his forehead or stroking his beard in a pensive manner. When posing behind another performer, he sometimes does something malicious such as preparing to knock them out with a mallet. His movements are relatively static in front of the audience. He needs all  the space to himself and gains it by gesturing out from the body as if sowing a seed. He ‘parps’ like a trombone when speaking and pronounces â€Å"S† as â€Å"Sh†. He is a neighbour and friend or rival of Pantalone (either way, the two are inseparable), and since he is a natural parasite, sees the advantage of being patronized by him. To acknowledge or talk to the audience he needs a context in order to make a direct address – the giving of a lecture for example. He gives the other characters a break from physical exertion by his prolixity – sometimes to the point where he has to be carried off by them, still talking. For this reason he stays a relatively long time onstage. A survivor, not a target figure like Pantalone. He is essentially belly, not intellect and is extremely vocal. Il’Dottore is inclined, like Pantalone, to be stingy, but in his case it is because he doesn’t have any money. The doctor is an eternal gasbag; he cannot open his mouth without spitting out a Latin phrase or quotation. He believes someone suffers from an ailment, which they obviously do not, and offers to cure them. He spontaneously diagnoses performers on stage, tries to enlist assistance to help him perform experimental surgeries on himself and others, as well as performs random experiments in the name of science and medicine.
